Why Is Los Angeles Water Hard?
The water in Los Angeles is considered hard because it is naturally high in mineral salts, including magnesium and calcium. Magnesium and calcium are the two minerals that make up what we call hardness.
Los Angeles tap water also contains other minerals like iron, copper, and calcium carbonate.
The concentration of calcium is very high in the groundwater that LA uses. The soils in this area are very rich in calcium carbonate. This mineral readily dissolves in groundwater as it flows through the soils and bedrock. The most calcium carbonate rich water comes from groundwater sources and the Colorado River Aqueduct.
The water that comes from the MWD is also high in hardness. This water is transported a very long distance.
