What is pH?
The term “pH” stands for “potential of hydrogen” and is a measure of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration in a solution. It is expressed on a logarithmic scale that ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being considered neutral.
A pH value below 7 indicates an acidic solution, while a pH value above 7 signifies an alkaline or basic solution. The lower the pH value, the more acidic the solution; conversely, the higher the pH value, the more alkaline the solution.
How is pH Measured?
There are several methods for measuring pH, including using pH indicator paper, colorimetric indicators, and electronic pH meters.
● pH indicator paper: This is a simple and inexpensive method that involves dipping a strip of specially treated paper into the solution. The paper changes color based on the pH of the solution, and the resulting color can be compared to a reference chart to determine the pH value.
● Colorimetric indicators: These are chemical compounds that change color based on the pH of a solution. They can be added to the solution in liquid form or impregnated in a solid matrix. The resulting color change can then be compared to a reference chart or measured using a colorimeter to determine the pH value.
● Electronic pH meters: These devices use a pH-sensitive electrode, usually made of glass, to measure the potential difference between the solution and a reference electrode. This potential difference is then converted to a pH value using the Nernst equation. Electronic pH meters provide the most accurate and precise pH measurements, but they require regular calibration and maintenance.
What Does pH Indicate?
In the context of drinking water, pH can impact its taste and corrosiveness. Water with a very low pH can taste sour and corrode pipes, while water with a very high pH can taste bitter and cause scaling in pipes and appliances. The ideal pH for drinking water is typically between 6.5 and 8.5, as it provides a balance between taste and safety.

How I Measured the pH of Each Bottle of Water
For this article, I tested the pH of 38 different brands of bottled water using a digital pH meter. This comprehensive testing process allowed me to compare the pH levels across various brands and draw conclusions about their alkalinity or acidity.
Testing Procedure
To measure the pH of each bottle of water, I began by pouring 2 ounces of water from the bottle into a clean cup. I then followed the instructions provided with my digital pH meter to ensure accurate readings.
After obtaining the pH measurement, I poured out the water and added another 2-ounce sample from the same bottle to the cup. I measured the pH of this second sample to verify the consistency of the results.
About the pH Meter
The pH meter I used in this study is a TDS/pH/Temperature 3-in-1 pH Meter for Water from the brand JulyPanny. This versatile meter can measure pH, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), and temperature with high precision.
It features a high sensitivity glass probe that allows for accurate pH readings within a range of 0-14.0 and a measurement accuracy of ± 0.01 pH. The meter comes factory calibrated but can be recalibrated using the included pH 4.00, pH 6.86, and pH 9.18 calibration powders if necessary.
This compact and portable device is perfect for on-the-go testing and can be used in various environments, such as pools, beaches, and camping trips.
Conclusion
As we discussed, pH is a crucial aspect of water quality that influences its taste, safety, and potential health benefits. The pH levels of bottled water brands can vary, highlighting the importance of being informed about your preferred brand’s source and treatment process.
For the testing I did, the pH varied from a low of 4.3 for the Montellier bottled water to a maximum of 10.2 for the Smart Water Alkaline bottle.
